Our protection details
These details will be completed once our protection arrangements are confirmed. If you have any question about whether a particular booking would be financially protected, please ask us before you pay and we will tell you in writing.
- ATOL number: [ATOL NUMBER — to be added once issued]
- ABTA membership number: [ABTA NUMBER — to be added if membership is obtained]
- Insolvency protection for packages without flights: [INSOLVENCY PROTECTION PROVIDER AND POLICY DETAILS — to be added once confirmed]
What financial protection means
Financial protection is about what happens to your money, and to your trip, if the travel company you booked with stops trading because it becomes insolvent. With protection in place, you can get your money back if you have not yet travelled, or be brought home and helped to complete your trip if you are already away. Without it, you may have to claim as a creditor of the failed company and could lose your money.
Package holidays: the Package Travel Regulations 2018
The Package Travel and Linked Travel Arrangements Regulations 2018 apply when a travel company combines at least two different types of travel service, such as flights and accommodation, for the same trip and sells them together, or at an inclusive price. Many Umrah packages are packages under these Regulations.
Under the Regulations, the organiser of a package must protect the money customers pay for it against the organiser’s insolvency, and, where transport is included, make sure customers can be brought home. The organiser must also give customers standard information about their rights before they book. This protection can be provided in different ways, for example through a bond, an insurance policy or a trust account.
Packages that include flights: ATOL
ATOL (Air Travel Organiser’s Licence) is a UK government-backed scheme run by the Civil Aviation Authority. In general, UK companies that sell packages which include a flight must hold an ATOL. When a booking is ATOL protected, the customer should receive an ATOL Certificate as soon as they pay any money, which lists what is protected. If the company fails, the scheme arranges refunds or repatriation.
You can check whether a company holds an ATOL, and read more about how the scheme works, on the Civil Aviation Authority’s website: https://www.caa.co.uk/atol-protection.
Flight-only and hotel-only bookings
A flight booked on its own, where the ticket is issued straight away by the airline, is usually not covered by ATOL. Neither is a hotel booked on its own. These bookings may instead be protected in other ways, for example if the airline or hotel fails you may be able to claim from your travel insurance (if it includes scheduled airline failure or end supplier failure cover).
Linked travel arrangements
If you book one travel service and then, within 24 hours, book another for the same trip through a link or a targeted offer, this may be a linked travel arrangement. These carry more limited protection than packages, and the company must tell you clearly what protection, if any, applies.
ABTA
ABTA is a trade association for UK travel agents and tour operators. Members agree to follow a code of conduct and offer access to a dispute resolution service, and many also provide financial protection for some bookings through ABTA. Membership is voluntary. You can check a company’s membership at https://www.abta.com.
